Lakes and bogs
The Haut-Jura region is dotted with small natural lakes carved out by glacial erosion.
Located between 800 and 1,200 meters above sea level, these lakes are generally surrounded by wetlands characterized by unique vegetation known as peat bogs.
An exceptional site
The Bellefontaine and Mortes lakes
Among the highest in the Haut-Jura, the Bellefontaine and Mortes lakes and peat bogs represent an ecological environment of great value with their characteristic boreo-arctic vegetation.
They are part of the Natura 2000 network of protected sites: this recognition aims to preserve these ecosystems from threats (drought, agricultural pollution, etc.) and to guarantee enhanced protection for these fragile habitats.
